The € 9,5 billion MetroLink rail project is transformative for the transportation landscape of Dublin by improving connectivity between national rail links. The route includes 16 stations and it will on average have a train at each stop every 3 minutes during peak times.
This is the first project of its kind in Ireland and it can rise to a service every 90 seconds by 2060 with the system capable of carrying up to 20,000 passengers per hour in each direction. It’s been on the officials’ table for two decades and it will finally be implemented and hardwired to the very ambitious climate targets: over 1 billion carbon neutral, fully electrified passenger trips by 2050. The project will improve the quality of the urban environment and enable the development of more well-connected homes through a shift from the private car to more sustainable travel. Final goal: to decarbonize the transport sector.
